Our web3 threads of the week
Hey bud! It's your weekend pal, Twisted Hank. I'm back with some web3 threads, a case of cold ones, and the keys to my cousin's boat ...just don't tell him we're using it, ok?
Today's stories:
The Reddit metaverse, from @liamherbst_
Ethereum and cancer, from @arigoldnfts
How to use Etherscan, from @blockworks_
Elon's Twitter roadmap, from @thatroblennon

on Reddit's secret metaverse, from @liamherbst_
Reddit is secretly building a metaverse empire.
NFT avatars are JUST the start.
Here's their master plan and how you can capitalize 🧵

@liamherbst_ thinks that Reddit's web3 plans go far beyond their recently released "Collectible Avatars"
According to them, the entire website can be thought of as a metaverse.
Subreddits act as virtual worlds, Karma (Reddit money) is the currency, and the new Avatars allow users to carry their identity across ecosystems.
hey, what are Reddit Collectible Avatars?
Reddit made waves this week with its "collectible avatar" project, where Redditors can buy and own their profile pictures, getting access to special benefits.
While the avatars launched in July, you can now trade them on OpenSea. This caused them to explode in popularity, with several collections ranking in the marketplace's top 10 in recent days.
Although the avatars live on the blockchain and are technically NFTs, Reddit has chosen to go light on web3 terminology in its marketing and promo.
This approach seems to have paid off – with millions of new users getting involved.
We looked into this story earlier in the week. Read our take on Reddit's blockchain moves here.
on Ethereum and cancer treatment, from @arigoldnfts
1) 🧵I work in medicine, and Ethereum is being used to cure cancer (seriously).
A thread you don’t want to miss 👇

@arigoldnfts explains how researchers are combining machine learning and the blockchain to speed up analysis of cancer imaging, and then securely distribute AI parameters across locations and practitioners.
why use blockchains for holding medical data tho?
Can't you just use a regular distributed database for storing and sending this kind of information?
Sure you can, but using the Ethereum chain brings a few key benefits:
Data can't be corrupted by anyone but can be viewed by everyone
Smart contracts were used to give access, safeguarding patient confidentiality
Expect to see more experiments on how blockchains can be used across different industries in the near future.
on how to use Etherscan, from @Blockworks_
🧵 How to use Etherscan, one of crypto's most powerful tools:

Etherscan can be a helpful tool – if you know how to use it. To most of us, though, all those dashboards and acronyms look pretty intimidating.
Luckily, @blockworks has put together an informative how-to thread.
hey, what's Etherscan?
Etherscan is a search engine for the Ethereum blockchain. It indexes the entire chain, which means it can provide analytics and info on any Ethereum transaction.
Just type in an Ethereum wallet address, and see its entire transaction history.
btw – Google is now crawling certain Etherscan features, which means that you can find out wallet address balances just by googling them 👀
and finally, on Elon's Twitter plans, from @thatroblennon
What’s going on with Twitter, Elon Musk,
and how to think about the future of the Twitterverse:
~a thread~
(perspective from a hyper-growth Twitter expert)
— Rob Lennon 🗯 (@thatroblennon)

Here, @thatroblennon gives his predictions on how Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter will play out.
It starts with C-suite firings and freezing the code (already happened). After that, expect a few months of quiet, followed by a flashy reveal of an inspiring new vision for the platform.
Will Elon then be able to follow through on that new vision? I guess it depends on your opinion of the guy – and whether you think he's more of a showman than a closer.
hey, why do web3 people care about Elon x Twitter?
Crypto Twitter (or CT if you're cool) is home to many of web3s most active communities.
Musk is a long-time advocate of Twitter, crypto, and NFTs – and has already voiced support for attempts to decentralize social media.
It's also been reported that Binance, the crypto exchange, contributed funds toward Elon's buyout, and will be advising on how to integrate blockchain tech with Twitter.
Many hope that an Elon-run Twitter will be more web3 forward, supporting crypto, NFTs, and other features in-platform.
Another one down. We're getting so knowledgeable out here, soon we'll have enough threads for a full web3 sweater. Bye!
