Biggie NFTs come with freestyle licensing

Chris Wallace, The Notorious B.I.G, would have been 50 this year. Celebrating his legacy, NFT platform OneOf and The Wallace Estate have created The Sky’s the Limit, a collection & Web3 community that will give fans more ownership over Biggie’s legacy.

Artwork for the collection is a generative model (examples pictured above) of the rapper inspired by three of his personas: richer than richie, business instead of game, and Brooklyn bandit.

Why is this interesting?

Holders of B.I.G NFTs get voting power over how a famous but previously unlicensed Biggie freestyle will be used. OneOf has the rights to “Fulton Street Freestyle,” an early, well-known recording of a 17-year-old Biggie Smalls doing his thing on a Brooklyn street corner:

Owning an NFT gets you entry to the Sky’s the Limit collective, the Web3 community that will decide how the audio is licensed, and which musicians and artists can remix or sample the freestyle in their own work.

It’s a great way to give fans a role in the next iteration of Biggie’s discography. Streaming revenue from the licensing will also flow back into the collective for use in future projects.

Who is OneOf?

Built on Tezos, OneOf is an NFT platform that’s fast gaining a reputation for music-related projects – they’ve minted a collection for a previously unreleased Whitney Houston demo, plus have several drops for hip hop stars and big events like the Grammys and Montreux Jazz Festival.

Like other generative collections, NFT rarity is determined by different “traits” such as the “classic cane” or the “vanta italianos sunglasses”. This is definitely a project for the Biggie purists!

3 cool things about this collection

  • Legacy - Bringing a hip hop icon into web3

  • Usecase - The project part-funds the creation of new music

  • Niche - OneOf is becoming a go-to platform for music-based NFT

In an interview with nftnow, Biggie’s former manager Wayne Barrow underlined that the motivation for the collection is all about giving fans “ownership over a piece of work [The Notorious B.I.G.] created and having a license to create their own work from that.”

Later this year, NFT holders will also get VIP access to The Brook metaverse. Based on 90’s Brooklyn, it looks set to be a gamified virtual experience that will host events, shows, and other hip hop-related content – so you can see Biggie in his natural habitat.

The details

We recommend making an account on OneOf, and adding payments methods if you indeed are looking to purchase a Biggie NFT.

This is a nice entry into the Tezos NFT ecosystem! We are going to explore more about the OnePass, which is the the genesis NFT from OneOf. Consisting of 2,600 NFTs with "forever benefits".

We couldn't find the price of the NFT, but according to @thenewroyalhig1, it appears to only be $10 dollars? Addendum: Public mint price is $100 dollars. Appears OnePass holders had access for cheaper.

The Daily Listen

Here's our favourite NFT/Web3 podcast this week:

Pio and Node break down the 3AC NFT wallet. These guys (3AC) were dropping serious money last year. Lots of 'blue chips', purchased at the absolute peak. 1800 ETH for a ringer! The hosts of this podcast are great, like hanging with your buddies talking shit. Worth a listen.
