InfiniMerge X Inhabitants web3 game

Here at the Decentra Daily editor's office, we've been a little addicted to InfiniMerge.

It's a Candy Crush / Triple Town-style puzzle game where you merge pieces to rack up high scores – with a twist.

The twist: InfiniMerge is a web3 game.

That means players can own characters, rent out their avatars, and win game assets that are worth real $.

Right now, the game is still in development, so we've been playing a demo level that's free to all.

Starting this Thursday, InfiniMerge is going Super Smash Bros. In other words, a special mashup edition of the game is launching, which incorporates another big NFT universe: Inhabitants.

Inhabitants merge

Every quarter, the creators of InfiniMerge make a "community merge" edition of their game, featuring another web3 universe.

This time, it's Inhabitants – NFT characters from a world where a mysterious "pulse" rippled the fabric of our solar system, transforming people into powerful beings.

Why care about web3 games like InfiniMerge? 🤔

While games like InfiniMerge might be small right now, the thinking behind them could revolutionize the player ↔️ game relationship.

In the future, we might expect to receive more than just enjoyment from investing our time in video games.

Think: financial rewards and community involvement.

Plus, games like Wolf Game (covered below) are demonstrating unique ways to use blockchain tokens.

Their NFT characters and ERC-20 game tokens interact in ways not seen in other non-gaming web3 projects.

And for the players, web3 games offer the chance to own part of a narrative universe they enjoy and spend time in.

8 Inhabitants NFTs (owned by community members) have been transformed into InfiniMerge pieces for this special edition of the game, which has 10 ETH of Inhabitants prizes up for grabs.

Pixel Vault is the company behind Inhabitants, as well as a connected comic book universe, PUNKs.

They're busy building their own web3 game, too.

How do I play?

While the InfiniMerge Demo is open to all, you can only play the special edition Inhabitants version of the game if you own Inhabitants assets – or one of InifiniGods game passes:

Who makes InfiniMerge?

The game is made by blockchain gaming studio InfiniGods, a company founded by Facebook Gaming, EA, and LucasArts veterans.

Founded in 2021, InfiniGods raised a seed round of $9M from Pantera Capital, Framework Ventures, and Animoca Brands.

InfiniMerge is the first in a series of mobile and desktop games under development by InfiniGods.

Each game is based on ancient civilizations and contains gods – characters with special abilities that boost your chances of winning.

Previously, Infinigods collabed on a merge game with another web3 gaming franchise, Wolf Game.

Not to be outdone, they also have a full game coming out in December. 🎮🔥

What is Wolf Game?

On a farm in the metaverse, Wolves and Sheep compete for $WOOL...

Wolf Game is a play-to-earn farming-style game built on the Ethereum blockchain. It combines NFTs, coin tokens, and game theory to create a game that involves betting, staking, and real rewards and losses.

Its creator, the mysterious "Shepherd", calls Wolf Game a "world of strategy and game theory, ruled by the Wolves."

Wolf Game revolves around Wolves, Sheep, and Farmers – and the resource $WOOL.

Players make decisions about how to generate, collect, and steal $WOOL, all of which have knock-on effects on the real-world value of game items.

Real risk & reward

What sets Wolf Game apart from other recent gaming projects is its on-chain risk protocol.

Game pieces are tied to the blockchain to create real stakes, so player decisions have genuine financial consequences.

Developing these systems for Wolf Game has resulted in new blockchain mechanics, like NFTs that can "steal" or "Tax" other NFTs, as Wolves kidnap Sheep or put premiums on $WOOL.

Wolf Game became popular in the NFT community when web3 influencers like Beanie.eth and Gary Vee began playing one of the limited-access versions of the game, released in the run-up to the full launch next month.

Better than the Bored Apes game?

Back at the beginning of this year, arguably the biggest NFT franchise, Bored Apes Yacht Club, launched its own mobile game called Apes Vs Mutants.

Released for a limited time, banana-throwing Bored Apes battled Rat-slinging Mutants in a labyrinth of sewers beneath the Yacht Club.

Like InfiniMerge and Wolf Game, Ape NFT holders could compete in a tournament for real prizes like pinball machines, bongs, and a custom car:

But, reactions to the game from "Apes" were mixed.

Many were unhappy with the gameplay mechanics and rules, feeling that they were designed to reward (an unhealthy amount of) participation over skill.

– meaning that those who went without sleep and logged into the game every few hours would gain the most rewards.

Others also expressed disappointment with the lack of variety between each level. 😕

So will this latest round of web3 games be any better?

Decentra Daily says... Yes!

While the Apes Vs Mutants was cool, it was lite on web3 features.

Basically, it was a standard mobile game that contained extra perks for those lucky enough to own a Bored Ape NFT.

Now, we're seeing the first releases in a new wave of true on-chain gaming.

Whether it's NFT passes – like tickets in an arcade – or tokenized game pieces with changing dollar values, today's web3 gaming projects are evolving the fundamental dynamic between players and the games they love. 🙌
