Why do gamers hate the blockchain so much?

Gamescom 2022 is happening right now. It’s a big industry venue for studios to make announcements and drop game previews.

One of those new game teasers was Everywhere, a mysterious open-world MMO created by a former Grand Theft Auto lead. It’s going to have elements of world building, digital IDs, and metaverse socializing – and it’s opened old emotional scars about decentralized/monetized gaming.

What is Everywhere?

Here’s the teaser:

  • Its slogan is “time for a new world”

  • The game’s developer, Build A Rocket Boy, has blockchain job postings and investors

  • Looks like there’s some game-within-a-game type stuff going on?

  • It’s built on Unreal Engine, which gives it a big advantage in terms of graphics & gameplay

  • Game Director Adam Whiting says it will be a “place to play, watch, share, create, and hang out with your friends.”

  • So, Fortnite for grown-ups?

Why are gamers getting angry?

Lol.

While it isn’t exactly hard to rile the gaming community, there is a sizeable resistance to decentralized games from both studios and players.

Part of this might be due to companies worrying about revenue models if the space becomes more about players creating and owning self-made worlds and activities.

There’s also corporate stress about profit loss if games themselves become tokenized and sold on secondary marketplaces.

As for gamers – they’ve been burned before by greedy studios monetizing in-game elements that were once only earned by having skills and grinding.

Loot boxes, unlockables, and in-game advantages have all been offered for a price in recent titles.

Blockchain games have also been the source of outright scams and hacks in the past.

When will we know more about Everywhere?

Here’s the game’s website.

Everywhere was first announced all the way back in 2017. Since then, it’s developed a fan base committed to discovering more details.

Even though three full studios are working on Everywhere, it still has no official release date. But, Adam Whiting has said it could be as early as 2023.

We've been tracking high ROI wallets, here’s what they have been purchasing recently. We do not recommend buying these projects, DYOR, as you could likely be someone’s exit liquidity.

Here's what they're buying today:

These just dropped a few hours ago. Honestly nothing really jumping about this project from their roadmap, it’s a Japanese style anime project. Only 777 released so there’s that? Was a free, WL only mint and I’m guessing the “Genesis” in their name implies more to come. Floor price is practically free so why not roll the dice. 520 sales in the last 3 hours.

Some interesting tech in this one, Blonks are 100% on chain with no external dependencies. What this means for you non-nerds is that most NFTs just point to a file on the internet to display your image. But not Blonks. These will stay with you even during the apocalypse. Assuming you also keep a full backup of the blockchain on your hard drive and a stationary bike powered computer. They are also continually generative, with the traits being partly based on the wallet address that holds them, changing when they change wallets. Full CC0 too. 2,240 sales in the last 8 hours.
