What is post-photography? (Post Photographic Perspectives collection)

A couple of weeks back, AI artist Roopie Rainisto brought attention to the emerging genre of post-photography, with his collection Life in West America.

LiWA is the most recent release from Braindrops – the AI art curation platform – and it's doing well!

The collection has generated over 1600 ETH in volume, from +80% unique owners, with a floor that's stabilized at around 10 ETH.

But what defines post-photography?

The meaning of post-photography has been crystalizing for about a decade. The genre was discussed at Biennale 2015 and was the subject of a 2014 book.

The first element of a PP artwork is a photographic aesthetic or feel.

A piece of post-photography makes your brain say "photo," even though it may not have been made with a camera, or meet the traditional definition of a photograph.

"The artwork doesn't have to look realistic, but it has to feel real," says Roopie Rainsto, in an interview about his new collection.

And the "post-" part?

The prefix most obviously refers to the fact that post-photography is usually made without a camera – in most current cases, using AI image diffusion models such as Stable Diffusion.

But collections like LiWA are post-photographic in a conceptual sense, too.

The dream-like, hive-mind visuals produced when AI image generators are tuned to photo-realistic standards have much to say about our content-crazy digital times.

In a world of phone cameras, deepfakes, and TikTok filters, post-photography questions our relationship with visual media.

Next month, we're getting the first major post-photography show

Roope Rainisto has joined with the photography platform Fellowship to present Post Photographic Perspectives.

The April auction event will include "1,500 unique AI-generated artworks by some of the leading voices of the post-photography movement."

Here's how things shape up

Roope Rainisto's first full, 500-piece collection since LiWA – REWORLD – will be sold via Dutch auction on day one of the show.

On the second day, ten, one-hundred-piece collections by post-photographic artists will be up for grabs.

The artists, selected by Rainisto, include AI.S.A.M, Katie Morris, and Andrés Hernandéz.

Auction details

  • April 6 & 7 at 1 PM EST

  • Dutch auction format

  • Patron Pass holders get exclusive access for the first 30 mins

  • REWORLD price will be 10 ETH, dropping by 0.2 ETH every minute until 1 ETH

  • Other artworks will be 0.2 ETH

You can find the full details on the exhibition site.

The Summoning approaches, 2nd Trip details, and Don't Drink Me trademark

Three pieces of tasty Yuga Labs news for you this morning!

Final metadata update as The summoning approaches

Sewer passes have been loaded with the last batch of metadata before holders get the chance to convert them into Yuga's new set of collectibles at "The Summoning" next week (Mar 15).

Season 1 of the Dookey Dash minigame was about posting high scores that gave your pass a mint priority.

Season 2, Toad Mode, reopened the sewer to let holders compete for extra rarity traits, in the form of "companions" that will materialize at The Summoning.

The second live interactive Otherside tour is coming at the end of the month

10,000 Otherdeed holders will have a chance to join the 2nd Trip on Saturday, March 25 (exact time TBA).

This time, Yuga says you can bring a friend along for the ride with a Guest Pass.

Expected features in this demo include splitting Voyagers into teams with "Captains" as well as interactions with new Otherside characters and environments.

Here's a blog post with the full info. There'll be a livestream for those who can't make the trip.

Don't Drink Me beers, energy drinks, and seltzers? 🍻

Remember this label? It appeared on a magical bottle that Curtis fished from the swamp in the first Otherside trailer, nearly a year ago.

Thanks to a pesky piece of swamp weed covering the label's warning, Curtis drank from the bottle and was transported to The Otherside.

Now, perhaps as another Otherside promo, Yuga Labs have filed a trademark to make IRL drinks featuring the label.

The application covers branding for beer, energy drinks, non-alcoholic beverages, juices, water, and sodas.
