#1 The Checks ecosystem gets a pfp

Around the time that Jack Butcher released this year's hottest collection, Checks, he also put out a whimsical 15K open edition called Opepen.

Originally, the collection artwork featured a zoomed-in, stylized version of Pepe the frog's face.

A couple of days ago, however, Jack did one of his now customary metadata flips – and changed the artwork to a big green circle.

Then came a tweet that sent the Opepen floor price skyrocketing:

The suggestion of a pfp collection involving Opepens (either as a mint pass, or evolving into the pfps itself) was enough to drive more than 7,000 ETH in trading volume.

Cue the metadata train.

This time, instead of cycling through configurations of checkmarks, Opepens have begun to expand from single circles into patterns of varying colors and sizes.

So what will the pfps be like?

According to Jack, the fact that Opepen's started as a homage to Pepe isn't a sign that his pfps will be connected to the internet's most famous frog.

His recent tweets suggest his collection won't have much in common with the standard, trait-based, anthropomorphic cartoons that currently define the pfp aesthetic.

Checks is to remain the central visual of Jack's ecosystem – and his pfps will use the verification symbol as a "metameme."

What does that mean?

Likely that, whatever visuals Jack creates, they'll share the same meme-friendly, meta-commentary we've come to expect from Jack Butcher projects.

#2 fRiENDSiES pulls the rug?

In case you were getting nostalgic for the days of classic NFT rug pulls, fRiENDSiES attempted to officially ghost its community yesterday.

They tweeted a perfunctory goodbye before deleting their social channels and going to ground with around $5 million in NFT sales.

Here's what they said in their final tweets before deleting their account...

...and then...

Here's what they said after reactivating their account to post (an attempt at) an explanation:

πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ That's a whole lot of words to say "we have no future plans for this project"...

What is Friendsies?

  • fRiENDSiES was created by FriendsWithYou, an art studio and brand that's been around for over two decades

  • Artworks and designs by FriendsWithYou have been shown in museums, galleries, and events all over the globe

  • The studio's famous little cloud has been recreated as a toy, parade float, and Netflix cartoon

  • fRiENDSiES was the brand's 10K pfp collection, which minted out in April '22

Will millions in NFT revenue in the bank, the project's roadmap and discord promised the development of a P2E game.

But according to NFT sleuth @zachxbt, there's been no evidence of any game development, nor proper handling of community funds.

In fact, the project team seems to have been silent since September. πŸ˜•

Will fRiENDSiES stick around, or even return in a stronger form?

I doubt it ...but we've seen stranger things happen in the world of pfps.

#3 License your NFT for the Jenkins podcast

Jenkins has been gearing up to search the metaverse (or at least, participating NFT universes) for his missing dog for a while now.

The podcast is still in development, but if you took up the chance to turn your NFT into a character for the show, you can now license them.

To license a character, you'll need two things:

  1. a Jenkins writers' Room NFT

  2. an NFT character profile on the podcast website

(If you only have one of those, Jenkins encourages you to make a deal with somebody else in the community.)

Characters licensed by higher-tier writers' room members will get more exposure in the podcast.

For example, characters licensed by "WAGMI Yacht" holders get cameo roles.

And just like Jenkins the Valet's previous community project, the Bored & Dangerous novel, any profits generated by the podcast are due to be distributed to licensors who contribute their IP.

Presumably, also like that project, there may be issues around profit distribution and the need for licensors to KYC to receive payment.

Jenkins the Valet says they are "exploring other solutions" suggested by followers for writers' room members who don't want to disclose their identity.

The character licensing window is open until March 17th
