#140 - RTFKT Clone X Exodus πŸš€

Plus, VCs fav web3 projects & Fraggle Rock trading cards

GM and welcome to Decentra Daily.

We're the newsletter coming to you from gloomy, mid-winter PNW – wishing web3 would get together and agree to hibernate until spring.

But no! Web3 never stops. So neither must we.

Today,

  • Clone X Exodus – what's happening?

  • Here are the web3 projects VCs liked last year

  • Tibbles: another official IP trading card marketplace

Where are RTFKT's Clones going?

Back in October, RTFKT announced "story mode: engaged" and teased a bunch of new chapters in their pfp/metaverse project.

What were these chapters?

They took the form of short videos with cool sci-fi names like The Warning, The Signal, and Exodus.

The videos signal a shift for the fashion-focused project into more story and lore content

– a catastrophic event has caused all 19,722 Clone X avatars (the central NFTs in RTFKT's ecosystem) to leave their planet and travel together to find a new home.

Get your Pods travel-ready

To make that journey, RTFKT is offering Space Pod and Loot Pod holders the chance to upgrade to new Exo & Lux Pods by burning their current digital homes.

Pods are virtual apartments where Clone X holders can hang out and display collectibles.

All four pod types (Space, Loot, Exo, and Lux) will be transported across the metaverse on Clone fleet ships – plus, the 2 older pod types are getting a refresh for the trip.

The deets

  • Exo Pods are "space penthouses" and require burning 2 Space Pods + 2 Loot Pods

  • Lux Pods are "space luxury" and require burning 20 Space Pods + 20 Loot Pods

  • The only place to burn is in the hangar section of the exodus site

  • There'll be a 2-week notice before the burn window ends

What's the destination?

Later this year, the Clone X journey should culminate in Project Animus, when a new set of sidekick collectable characters will airdrop into the ecosystem.

And, if all these RTFKT projects, lore, and drops are too much for your brain to handle at once (I know they are for mine), here's a neat "Project so far" video:

What web3 projects did VCs invest in last year?

@TheDeFinvestor, a crypto enthusiast and investor, took the time to research the largest investments made by VCs in 2022 and shared his findings in a recent thread.

VCs do spend lots of money on lots of startups – and often get things wrong.

But, seeing which projects they're interested in can be a signal about what ideas, products, and tech to watch.

So here's a rundown of the web3 projects that raised the most money in the space in '22.

Some you'll have heard of – some you might not know about, yet. πŸ‘€

Flow is the level 1 blockchain developed by Dapper Labs. In May, they announced a $725M fund to grow their network backed by a16z and Spartan Group.

Flow claims to solve scalability issues by dividing security and performance over different node groups. Currently a top-five blockchain by NFT sales volume.

Yuga is the studio behind BAYC. They raised $450M in 2022 to develop their NFT-based metaverse, The Otherside (next demo coming this Spring). The funding round was participated in by a16z and FTX.

Polygon raised $450M last Feb from 40 VCs, including Sequoia Capital and SoftBank Vision Fund. The funds are being used to continue investing in new projects and expand scaling.

Secret Network is a blockchain with customizable data privacy. Its smart contracts make it easier to host things like DEXs and money markets, which require some amount of privacy. The team announced $400M in funding for its ecosystem in January 2022.

NEAR Protocol is another level 1 blockchain that uses a scaling mechanism called Nightshade sharding. It caused a buzz in early 2022 when it raised $350M in a funding round led by Tiger Global.

Jim Henson on the blockchain – with Fraggle Rock NFT cards

After yesterday's announcement from Sorare, the fantasy sports trading card game, here's another company looking to bring popular entertainment franchises onto the blockchain.

Tibles is an NFT marketplace that runs on Flow. It's backed by $3 million in seed funding from companies including Dapper Labs (who are behind Flow, as well as NBA Topshot).

The platform's founder, Erich Wood, has previous involvement with trading card OGs Topps, and has managed to secure some big IP for his marketplace.

That includes Dr. Suess Seussibles and OneShots, which feature characters from Bloodshot, Shadowman, and Ninjak comics.

The latest franchise to come to Tibles is Jim Henson's beloved kids series, Fraggle Rock.

The card collection is hosted on an app that lets fans chat and trade with each other. Card packs start at $4.99 and can be displayed in a virtual sticker book.

The card drop accompanies Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, a reboot of the original series that's just been renewed for a second season on Apple TV.

Ciao! πŸ‘‹
