Big leak: Apple VR headset specs

Apple hasn't formally announced VR or metaverse plans. But a slow drip of leaks for over a year has confirmed the company is busy at work.

This week, a reliable source of Apple leaks delivered more info on their "XR headset," supposedly from Apple insiders.

"XR"?

XR stands for extended reality, which is a fancy way of saying the headset is a combination of virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality.

Basically, the device will let you interact with both real and virtual environments.

Here's the scoop on Apple's attempt at bringing headsets to the masses:

It's made of premium materials.

Aluminum, glass, and carbon fiber will give that 🀌 Apple feel and make the device extra light.

A wack battery setup?

A big challenge for headset designers is where to put the batteries. They can't be heavy – but nobody wants to be recharging every 30 mins.Apple's battery setup is unusual. It's waist-mounted and connected to the headset by a MagSafe power cable.

Apparently, it only lasts for two hours and was thought up by Apple’s former chief designer, Jony Ive.

Any pics?

No pictures in this leak, or in-depth technical details.

But earlier sketches show the headset looking like ski goggles made from an apple watch:

Media renderings of the Apple Headset based on leaked info

Meh? Not super into it tbh...

That headband is supposed to contain integrated speakers, plus an Apple Watch-style dial to flip between the virtual and real world.

Other details:

  • The headset has a wider field of view than the Meta Quest Pro

  • Integrated cameras with low latency – important for HD mixed reality

  • It'll come with VR "experiences" but doesn't include a gaming controller

Oh, and apparently it'll have an external display that shows the facial expressions of the person wearing the headset – not sure how that'll look. πŸ€”

Release date?

The report claims the headset was originally supposed to launch in 2022.

Apparently, it's gone through engineering validation at a testing facility near Shanghai.

So we should get an official announcement this year?

Apple often announces and releases products within a relatively short time span, so we could even see a late 2023 release.

How much?

As for the price, it's rumored to be around $3,000. For ski goggles with a clip-on battery?!

Ok but why though?

Like Meta, Apple is betting on corporate use cases as the first major gateway to VR.

One focus of the headset is said to be XR video conferencing with realistic avatars.

Another is seamless use of iOS apps - moving between devices and a large virtual screen.

(e.g. dragging a map from your phone to the coffee table and turning it into a 3D model of your destination.)

What's the connection between XR and web3?

One of web3's goals is to make the internet more immersive, moving content away from keyboards and into virtual environments.

We don't really know what virtual environments (metaverses) will look like yet.

They could be 3D, abstract, or something that mixes the digital & real world.

But, we do think that XR devices should make navigating environments more intuitive – and therefore more immersive.

NFT Inspect shuts up shop

"Social intelligence" tool NFT Inspect has announced they're closing down their service in a couple of weeks' time:

The platform lets you check out the value and community strength of different NFT projects and influencers.

People use NFT Inspect to keep track of which NFTs are being mentioned by popular Crypto Twitter accounts – helping them stay in the loop on which projects the cool kids are talking about.

Their Google-inspired Influence Rank algorithm "tries to understand who influences the influencers."

What you need to know:

  • NFT Inspect are closing both their website and Chrome extension

  • The company hasn't given an official reason for closure

  • But media outlets cite plunging NFT trading volumes as a possible cause

Worth noting – Inspect's announcement attracted lots of replies from loyal users, and a few who expressed interest in buying the company. So maybe all is not lost?
