BAYC's Trial of Jimmy the Monkey

BAYC and MAYC holders, it's time to break out your detective hats. 🕵️‍♀️

After months of anticipation, The Trial of Jimmy the Monkey started yesterday – with a short film kicking off a new chapter in the Bored Ape universe:

What's Jimmy done? Nothing too criminal so far.

In the film, Jimmy takes a legendary dump in the yacht club outhouse, spawning an inter-dimensional lockbox with mysterious contents.

After passing the box around the club's nightly party, Jimmy accidentally swallows its key during a game of beer pong.

Rushing back to the outhouse to "retrieve" the key, Jimmy pushes a little too hard and kicks the bucket while on the can.

– or, maybe he's just passed out. Either way, the apes seem pretty intent on retrieving the key ASAP and getting their paws on whatever's inside that box.

Which means someone's gotta swim up the U bend...

So, what's Jimmy's "trial"?

  • Maybe the "trial" was taking a poop big enough to summon an alternate dimension

  • Perhaps the apes will put Jimmy on trial for swallowing the key

  • Or, could the key represent that start of a long and difficult journey for Jimmy?

According to an accompanying thread, the rest of the narrative will be released in chunks (sorry for that image).

So unlike Jimmy, we'll have plenty of time to digest each piece of the story.

The thread also warns viewers to pay close attention to everything we see, as any small detail could be an important clue come the next stage of the project in January.

On Jan 18th, Apes will get the chance to participate in a free interactive mint.

If you take part, you'll need to "study the guide and plan your strategy" before entering the yacht club sewer and "discovering its treasures."

What you need to know:

  • There will be 4 mint tiers with different rewards

  • BAYC/MAYC holders with a BAKC get an exclusive tier

  • You can spend $APE to level up your minting experience

In an interview about the project, Yuga Labs founder Greg Solano said they made The Trial to "get back to some of the silliness, strangeness, and fun” that characterized the early BAYC community.

Yuga also suggests holding onto any mints, as "the trial is the prologue to a series of activations coming over the course of next year." 👀

Scottie Pippen's record-setting NFTs 🏀

Here are some killer Scottie Pippen stats:

  • Most steals in the 94/95 season

  • Seven-time All-Star

  • Fastest NFT sell out on OpenSea ...Wait, what? 🤔

Yessir. Pippen's digital sneaker collection, SP33, sold out in 77 seconds – beating the previous record of 7 mins set by Anthony Hopkins' digital art pieces.

Orange Comet, the company behind the collection, say the Ethereum-based SP33 sneakers are "metaverse ready," meaning that future avatars should be able to wear them across ecosystems.

Like Trump's sold-out drop last week, owners of Pippen collectibles get entered into a draw for gifts and prizes, such as autographed IRL sneakers, gift cards, and a round of golf/dinner with Pippen in his hometown.

What you need to know:

  • There are 1000 NFTs minted at 0.2 ETH

  • Sneaker designs are inspired by moments from Pippen's career

  • Pippen collabed with web3 media company Orange Comet to make the collectibles

  • NFT owners get on the allowlist for OC's next launch

NFT markets aren't in a great place right now – last month, volume across the top 5 marketplaces was the lowest of 2022.

So why did Pippen and Trump's collections fly off the shelves?

Maybe it's a combination of things:

Finding the right celeb and web3-engaged fanbase + keeping the collection supply and mint price reasonable + adding some kind of utility like giveaways or wearables.

Pippen's been doing his time on Twitter:

That's all, folks.

Tomorrow is our final newsletter of the year! We'll look back at some of our greatest hits of 2022.
