Starbucks NFT project is now in live beta

Coffee lovers: Starbucks Odyssey just launched (in beta) for Starbucks Rewards members in the US.

This is the long-awaited web3 version of the Starbucks Rewards program, powered by Polygon.

Many feel Odyssey is well-positioned to introduce digital collectibles to another large mainstream audience โ€“ just like Reddit's digital avatars did last month.

What you need to know

  • Odyssey members go on interactive journeys to earn collectible NFT "Stamps" and Odyssey Points

  • Example journeys include touring a coffee farm, taking a Starbucks history quiz, or playing branded mini games

  • Collecting Stamps and points unlocks three tiers of benefits and perks

  • These include an espresso martini-making class, artist collab merch, and IRL events at Starbucks Reserveยฎ Roasteries

As far as we know, Starbucks Odyssey is the first major company loyalty program to offer NFT-based incentives.

Odyssey invitations are rolling out on a monthly basis. You can join the waitlist here.

(Current Starbucks Rewards members should use the email associated with their account.)

Take a crypto MasterClass with the industry's biggest names

Have you come across MasterClass?

It's the premium video platform that lets you learn how to cook from Gordon Ramsey, choose DJ tracks with Questlove, or hone your serve with Serena Williams.

Now, you can sign up for a MasterClass on "crypto and the blockchain."

It's 3 hours and 40 minutes of content covering the what, why, and how of digital money, split across 18 lessons.

Students can choose between beginner and advanced classes.

(Although the "advanced" content looks like it's still tailored towards those less familiar with blockchains.)

Whichever option you choose, you'll get schooled by some straight-up industry experts. Your professors will be:

  • Chris Dixon, founder of a16z Crypto

  • CZ, co-founder and CEO of Binance

  • Emilie Choi, president & COO of Coinbase

  • Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize-winning economist

What's in the trailer?

CZ traces the birth of bitcoin back to the invention of the internet, encrypted emails, the 2008 crisis, and the fall of Lehman Brothers.

"When there's a catastrophic failure, a strong solution emerges."

Dixon explains the "cold start" problem and how tokens can help startups get off the ground.

"A whole bunch of networks that people have been trying to bootstrap for years can now be built using tokens."

Krugman questions the core utility of speculative cryptocurrencies.

"What problem does this solve? That's still the question I ask.

The experts also cover potential crypto issues and "drawbacks of on-chain technology," which seems like a refreshingly objective take.

Check out Crypto and the Blockchain: Everything you need to know on MasterClass.

Music NFTs don't care about the bear market

They might not get the same amount of attention as PFPs, art, or blockchain games. But music NFTs have been steadily growing over the past year.

LGND Music

This week, Warner Music Group announced a partnership with LGND.io to launch a marketplace on Polygon, dedicated to music NFTs.

Called LGND Music, the platform will host artists signed to Warner. Fans will be able to buy special tokenized content and experiences from their favorite bands โ€“ plus NFT tracks and albums.

The announcement comes alongside wider growth in music-related projects, bucking bear market trends.

For example, the music NFT marketplace Sound.xyz saw a 100% increase in mints in October and November, and looks set to double its numbers again this month.

Why music NFTs?

One of the motivations behind marketplaces like Sound.XYZ is to disrupt the current music streaming model.

Streaming apps tend to optimize for overall popularity, so lots of songs go unheard and only a few artists get the majority of listens.

As a result, talented musicians with smaller fan bases can have a hard time making enough money.

Enter: NFTs.

Instead of relying on labels and streaming apps, NFTs let musicians divide funding across their fan base and give listeners a way to directly support the music they like.

Musicians often have active fan communities who want to help them grow, and be part of the crowd who "knew them before they got big."

Plus, music NFTs can combine tracks, tickets, merch, meet-and-greets, and other special content โ€“ catering to everyone from casual listeners to audiophiles.

Other music NFT projects to check out:

  • Marketplace Royal lets people own a percentage of a song's streaming royalty rights.

  • Windows media player now supports NFT audio files

  • The band Muse released their 9th studio album as an NFT

  • Steve Aoki and 3LAU use their CryptoPunks to create an audiovisual experience

Have a great weekend!
